It is defined as the build-up of these toxic agents, and also as the effect that they have on the health and growth of surrounding plants and animals.<\/li>\n<li>Petroleum hydrocarbons, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (such as naphthalene and benzopyrene, solvents, pesticides and lead are the most common chemicals involved in soil pollution, as well as other heavy metals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3><b>WHAT ARE \u201cHEAVY METALS\u201d?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Heavy metals are defined as metals that have a density that is 5X greater than water, with an atomic weight of between 63.54 and 200.59, and about 5.0 g\/cc specific gravity. Humans consume them through the food and water we eat, leading to toxicity and damage even at low levels. Unfortunately, heavy metals tend, over time, to accumulate in the food chain, including the most common- As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy metals fall into 2 distinct categories:<\/p>\n<p>1.<b>Essential Heavy <\/b><b>Metals:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This includes Iron, Zinc, Manganese, Copper, Cobalt and Selenium.<\/li>\n<li>Essential heavy metals are important for the proper biological function of plants and animals, usually in very small (trace) amounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.<b>Non-Essential Heavy Metals<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chromium, nickel and silicon, among others, are considered nonessential heavy metals as only trace amounts are found in the human body and, if they remain below the \u2018threshold level\u2019, are harmless.<\/li>\n<li>There are numerous health problems associated with long-term exposure to heavy metals, including;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u25ba Mental lapses and brain damage &#8211; Lead<\/p>\n<p>\u25ba GI tract, kidney and liver damage &#8211; Cadmium<\/p>\n<p>\u25ba Kidney problems, skin poisoning and nervous system damage &#8211; Arsenic<\/p>\n<p>\u25ba Phytotoxicity is caused when there are high levels of heavy metals found in the soil. Ex situ (off-site) is even more expensive, since the soil must be removed and then treated at another location.<\/li>\n<li>These treatments include:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>oLong \u2013 term monitoring with vitrification<\/p>\n<p>oExcavation, transport and landfilling, with vitrification<\/p>\n<p>oTreating the soil chemically and recycling the contaminats<\/p>\n<p>oElectrokinectics with vitrification<\/p>\n<p>oPhytoextraction with vitrification<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is also unfortunate that, once heavy metals are introduced into a soil environment, they will remain there unless physically removed. After incubating in petri plate for 72 hours, our microbial coating began to form colonies around and throughout the heavy oil hydrocarbon substrate that was present. This demonstrates that alkane, as well as more complex hydrocarbons, were being digested and metabolized by the microbial colonies that were formed. In both oil samples the microbial colonies demonstrated significant growth.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<u><b><i>Hydrogen Sulfide Control Assay<\/i><\/b><\/u><u><b><i> Results<\/i><\/b><\/u><b><i>:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Here we see an H\u2082S side-by-side comparison between 2 heavy oil samples, one treated with microbes and the other untreated, with the black color coming from the formation of H\u2082S due to the sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) in the hydrocarbon substrate.<\/p>\n<p>In both of the microbially treated samples (on the right), the SRBs have been eliminated, and the microbial profile fundamentally shifted away from H\u2082S.<\/p>\n<p>Both of the treated samples showed the elimination of H\u2082S and the effective control of SRBs.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_column_text]<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4941 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.microbebio.com\/spanish-microbe-fertilizer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/85254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"399\" \/>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<u><b><i>Microbial Growth on Alkane Assay<\/i><\/b><\/u><u><b><i> Results<\/i><\/b><\/u><b><i>:<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In this test, the oil samples were split into untreated control samples and treated samples, whereafter the treated samples received an inoculation of 7 million CFU\/ml of microbes. Over the course of the following 6 days readings were taken via spectrophotometer to measure the absorbance values of the samples, which demonstrated a disturbance in wavelength through the test tube, suggesting increased microbial growth concentrations that were, in effect, interfering with spectrophotometer\u2019s light pathway.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the 6 day period, starting on day 1, there was a significant increase in the treated oil samples versus untreated, including microbial mass, and color (which darkened). The results showed that carbons from the hydrocarbon chains (as measured by globule formations) were being utilized and metabolized by the microbes, with a resultant smaller hydrocarbon chains and
